overview

The Tarsar Marsar Trek is a journey into Kashmir’s most serene and visually captivating alpine regions. Known for its pristine lakes, rolling meadows, and dramatic mountain backdrops, this trek strikes a perfect balance between beauty and challenge.

The trail winds through lush valleys, pine forests, and high pastures before opening into vast alpine meadows where Tarsar and Marsar Lakes sit like jewels surrounded by snow-clad peaks. The trek reaches altitudes of around 4,100 m, with steady climbs that demand endurance and patience.

The highlight of this trek is camping beside these high-altitude lakes — moments of complete stillness, broken only by mountain winds and shifting clouds. While the terrain is non-technical, long trekking days, altitude exposure, and unpredictable weather add a sense of adventure and seriousness.

Tarsar Marsar is ideal for trekkers who seek raw beauty, solitude, and a strong mountain connection. It’s a trek that doesn’t overwhelm with technicality but leaves a deep emotional impact long after it ends.

ITINERARY

Day 1

Srinagar to Aru/ Pahalgam by cab
We meet near Dal Lake. Srinagar to Pahalgam is a 3-hour journey by road. Aru village is 12 km from Pahalgam. Mobile data is available till Pahalgam, while you might get Wi-Fi at Aru.

Day 2

Trek from Aru (2300 m) to Lidderwat (2800 m)
The trail starts with a dense forest, which gradually gives way to alpine meadows. We walk beside the Lidder river, which originates from Kolahoi Glacier. The entire day is a little long, although there is not a lot of elevation gain. We finish our day at Lidderwat, after crossing the river. At Lidderwat, you will likely see a lot of sheep.

Day 3

Lidderwat to Sikhwas (3350 m)
We walk alongside the stream originating from Tarsar lake. We will be trekking beyond the treeline on this day, and we cross some boulder sections. We camp at Sikhwas campsite, which is nestled amidst multiple streams coming from Tarsar, Marsar, and Sundersar lakes.

Day 4

Sikhwas to Tarsar lake (3700 m)
This is a short day, but with a good amount of elevation gain to Tarsar lake. We reach Tarsar lake early and later do a day-hike to a nearby mountain top to get a 360-degree view of Tarsar lake.

Day 5

Tarsar lake to Marsar and Sundersar lake
This is a long day. Tarsar pass is a short steep climb from Tarsar lake, followed by an equally steep descent to the next valley. We camp in the valley, and then with lighter packs, we hike to Sundarsar and Marsar lakes. Sundersar lake comes first, and we circumnavigate half the lake to climb towards Marsar lake. We reach the mountain top overlooking Marsar lake and then return to our campsite

Day 6

Sundersar lake to Homwas
We return from our campsite near Sundersar lake towards Sikhwas, this time from a valley parallel to the one by which we had reached Tarsar lake.

Day 7

Homwas to Aru trek and Aru to Srinagar by cab
This is an easy day, with the trek from Homwas to Aru, and then a drive back to Srinagar.
