overview

The Markha Valley Trek is a striking expedition through the high-altitude cold desert of Ladakh, where stark landscapes, ancient villages, and towering peaks create an experience unlike any other Himalayan trek.

The trail follows river valleys, rocky paths, and exposed ridgelines, passing through remote settlements where life thrives in extreme conditions. The trek culminates with the crossing of Kongmaru La at 5,200 m, a demanding high-altitude pass that offers expansive views of the Kang Yatse massif.

Long trekking days, thin air, and dry conditions test endurance, while river crossings and steep ascents provide adrenaline moments. Unlike greener Himalayan treks, Markha Valley is about raw scale, altitude, and mental toughness.

This trek is best suited for trekkers who want a true high-altitude experience with cultural immersion and big-mountain terrain. Markha Valley pushes limits while offering unforgettable Himalayan solitude.

Note: Prices mentioned are applicable for Indian passport holders. For foreign passport holders, the cost may vary. Please connect with the Boots & Crampons team for clarity.

ITINERARY

Day 01: Arrival in Leh (11,500 ft / 3,500m)

Arrive in Leh and transfer to your hotel. Due to the high altitude, this day is kept strictly for rest and acclimatization. After check-in, spend the day relaxing and allowing your body to adjust to the thin mountain air. In the evening, you may take a short and gentle walk through Leh Bazaar, soaking in the vibrant local culture at a relaxed pace. Hydration is essential, and physical exertion should be avoided. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.

Day 02: Acclimatization Day in Leh

Today is dedicated entirely to acclimatization, which is crucial for a safe and enjoyable trek. After breakfast, we take a slow walk toward Shanti Stupa, offering panoramic views of Leh town and the surrounding mountains. Later, you can explore the local markets and cafés. Optionally, a visit to Leh Palace can be planned in the evening. The purpose of the day is to help the body adapt gradually to the altitude. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.

Day 03: Leh – Skiyu (Drive) – Trek to Sara (3,500m)

After breakfast, we drive from Leh to Skiyu, a journey of approximately 2 hours along the Indus River. En route, we stop at the historic Gurudwara Pathar Sahib. From Skiyu, we begin our trek toward Sara, covering a distance of around 10 km. The trail follows narrow valley paths alongside the river, passing through dramatic landscapes and small settlements. After a steady trek, we reach Sara, where our campsite is set up. Overnight stay in tents at Sara.

Day 04: Trek from Sara to Markha (3,700m)

Today’s trek covers approximately 10 to 11 km with a gradual altitude gain of about 200 meters. The trail takes us across wooden bridges, river crossings, and through charming Ladakhi villages dotted with small monasteries and chortens. By afternoon, we reach Markha, the largest village on the trail and an important cultural hub of the valley. We stay in a traditional homestay, offering a glimpse into local life and hospitality. Overnight stay in Markha village.

Day 05: Markha – Umlung – Hankar – Thachungtse (4,200m)

This is the longest trekking day of the journey, covering approximately 19 km. We trek through the villages of Umlung and Hankar, walking past ancient prayer walls, grazing pastures, and wide river plains. The valley becomes more open and dramatic, with chances of spotting wild animals such as blue sheep or marmots. By late afternoon, we reach Thachungtse, a beautiful high-altitude campsite set amidst vast open landscapes. Overnight stay in tents at Thachungtse.

Day 06: Thachungtse – Nimaling (4,700m)

Today’s trek is shorter but involves a significant altitude gain. We cover around 10 km as the scenery transitions into high-altitude wilderness. Rugged Zanskar peaks rise dramatically on one side, while the vast Changthang plains stretch out on the other. En route, we pass the holy pond associated with Guru Padmasambhava, an important spiritual site in the region. From Nimaling campsite, we enjoy stunning views of Kang Yatse, towering majestically to the right. Overnight stay at the high-altitude campsite in Nimaling.

Day 07: Nimaling – Kongmaru La (5,400m) – Chokdo – Drive to Leh

We start early today for the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. The climb to Kongmaru La, the highest point of the Markha Valley Trek, takes approximately 2 hours. From the pass, we are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of snow-covered peaks and expansive valleys. After crossing the pass, we begin a long descent through a stunning multicolored rock gorge, a visual highlight of the trek. The total trekking distance for the day is around 15 to 16 km and takes about 6 to 7 hours. Upon reaching Chokdo, we drive back to Leh, a journey of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.

Day 08: Departure from Leh

After breakfast, the trek officially concludes. Participants may depart for their onward journey or choose to continue exploring Ladakh’s monasteries, lakes, and high passes, or even begin another Himalayan adventure.
