ITINERARY

Day 01: Arrival in Manali – Drive to Solang – Trek to Shagadugh (3,200m)

On arrival in Manali, we begin a short scenic drive to Solang Valley, a popular gateway to several high-altitude treks in the region. After a brief halt to organize gear and meet the trekking team, we start our trek toward Shagadugh. The trail gradually ascends through alpine forests, open meadows, and rolling hills, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The trek takes approximately 3 to 4 hours and serves as a gentle introduction to the climb. Upon reaching Shagadugh, we set up camp and enjoy a peaceful evening in the high mountains. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 02: Acclimatization Hike from Shagadugh

Today is dedicated to acclimatization to help the body adapt to the altitude before the summit attempt. After breakfast, we head out on a gradual acclimatization hike, gaining some height above Shagadugh and exploring the surrounding ridges and meadows. The hike offers panoramic views of nearby peaks and valleys while allowing ample time to move slowly and steadily. After about 4 hours of hiking, we return to camp for rest, hydration, and preparation for the summit day. Overnight stay in tents at Shagadugh.

Day 03: Shagadugh – Patalsu Peak Summit (4,220m) – Shagadugh

We start early in the morning for the summit push to Patalsu Peak. The trail ascends steadily over alpine slopes and ridgelines, becoming steeper as we approach the summit. After several hours of climbing, we reach the summit of Patalsu Peak, where we are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges, along with the surrounding valleys of Manali. After spending some time at the top, we carefully descend back to Shagadugh. The round trek takes approximately 7 to 8 hours. Overnight stay in tents at Shagadugh.

Day 04: Shagadugh – Solang – Drive Back to Manali

After breakfast, we begin our descent from Shagadugh to Solang, retracing our steps through scenic alpine trails and meadows. The descent takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and is relatively easy. Upon reaching Solang, we drive back to Manali, marking the end of the trekking adventure. The remainder of the day is free to relax and explore Manali while reflecting on a rewarding Himalayan experience.

Frequently asked questions

You’ll encounter forest trails, ridgelines, rocky paths, steep ascents, and snow/ice terrain near higher camps/summit, especially in winter. The summit push includes steeper slopes — snow conditions vary by season.

The summit of Patalsu Peak is approximately 4,200 m (13,780 ft). In winter, snow depth and trail conditions add to the challenge.

This expedition is moderate to challenging due to:

  • steep uphill kms
  • exposure to altitude
  • snow/ice sections (especially in winter)

It’s a non-technical climb but requires good stamina and preparation.

No advanced technical climbing is required. However, you must be comfortable with:

  • trekking at high altitude
  • snow/ice movement (in winter edition)
  • use of crampons/ice-axe if conditions demand

Basic snow travel skills are recommended for winter.

Regular Season:

  • Spring & Autumn are ideal — stable weather, clearer days, and easier trail conditions.

Winter Training Season:

  • Jan to March — designed as a winter training peak with snow and cold conditions, great for building winter skills and high-altitude experience in snow.

Both seasons offer distinct experiences: regular is scenic and fun, winter is challenging and skill-building.

Typical itineraries are 3–5 days depending on the season and start point.
Daily walking durations range from 4–7 hours, with snow and winter conditions adding time in peak season.

You should have:

  • comfort walking 5+ hours/day

  • ability to handle uphill with a pack

➡️ For complete fitness and training expectations, refer to the Preparation Guide.

Essentials include:

  • Trekking boots (winter edition benefits from insulated boots)
  • Warm layers and waterproof outer layers
  • Crampons and gaiters (winter)
  • Water bottle + purification method
  • Headlamp, gloves, sun protection

➡️ A full gear checklist is included in the Preparation Guide.

Water is obtained from glacial streams and snow melt. The expedition team treats water, but climbers should carry personal purification tablets or filer water bottles as backup

  • A dedicated WhatsApp group will be created post-registration for preparation and coordination queries.
  • Zoom briefing sessions will be conducted to:
    • Walk through the expedition flow
    • Explain technical expectations
    • Clarify individual doubts
  • Each session will include a Q&A segment.

Patalsu Peak is a great climb for both high-altitude experience seekers and winter skill development. Regular season offers classic Himalayan hiking, while the Winter Training edition builds snow-travel confidence and endurance.
