overview

Also known as Kala Nag, Black Peak (6,387 m) is a serious high-altitude expedition set deep in the Garhwal Himalayas. This peak combines glacier travel, steep snow slopes, and long summit pushes, making it an excellent stepping stone toward larger Himalayan objectives.

The approach itself is demanding, with remote camps and extended days at altitude. Summit day involves snow and ice climbing, fixed ropes, and prolonged exposure above 6,000 m. Weather conditions can be harsh, adding to the expedition’s seriousness.

Black Peak is ideal for climbers looking to gain real expedition experience in a less commercial environment while preparing for higher and more technical climbs.

Note: Prices mentioned are applicable for Indian passport holders. For foreign passport holders, the cost may vary. Please connect with the Boots & Crampons team for clarity.
Note: An indemnity document will be shared before the expedition. Signing it is mandatory.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Dehradun – Sankri
We begin our journey from Dehradun Railway Station or ISBT and drive toward Sankri. We stop for breakfast at Kempty Falls and lunch at Purola before continuing to Sankri, a quiet mountain town surrounded by snow-capped peaks and fresh alpine air. Overnight in a guesthouse.
Drive duration: 10–12 hours

Day 2: Sankri – Taluka – Osla
After breakfast, we drive to Taluka, the starting point of our trek. From here, we begin trekking through dense walnut forests and traditional Himalayan villages. The trail follows the Supin River and gradually ascends to the culturally rich village of Osla, famous for its ancient Duryodhana temple. Upon arrival, we set up camp and explore the village. Overnight at camp.
Trek duration: 5–6 hours

Day 3: Osla – Ruinsara Lake
Today, we trek deeper into the valley toward the beautiful Ruinsara Lake. The trail offers stunning views of surrounding peaks and alpine landscapes. Ruinsara is a serene glacier-fed lake, considered sacred by locals, and provides an ideal setting for rest and acclimatization. Overnight at camp near the lake.
Trek duration: 6–7 hours

Day 4: Ruinsara Lake – Kyarkoti (Base Camp)
Leaving Ruinsara Lake behind, we continue trekking toward Kyarkoti, the Base Camp for Black Peak. The trail passes through meadows and open valleys with clear views of Black Peak and nearby summits. Kyarkoti serves as a strategic base for the upcoming climbing phase of the expedition. Overnight at Base Camp.
Trek duration: 4–5 hours

Day 5: Kyarkoti (Base Camp) – Advance Base Camp (Load Ferry)
Today is a crucial acclimatization and preparation day. We carry essential climbing equipment and supplies to Advance Base Camp (ABC) and then descend back to Base Camp. This load ferry helps the body adapt to higher altitude and prepares us for the summit phase. Overnight at Base Camp.
Trek duration: approx. 5 hours

Day 6: Kyarkoti (Base Camp) – Advance Base Camp
We retrace our route to Advance Base Camp, this time carrying all required gear to stay overnight. Upon arrival, we settle in, rest, hydrate, and prepare for the technical climbing days ahead. Overnight at Advance Base Camp.
Trek duration: approx. 5 hours

Day 7: Advance Base Camp – Camp 1 (Load Ferry)
Today, we move equipment toward Camp 1, crossing rugged terrain and glacial sections. Along the way, we enjoy impressive views of Swargarohini and Bandarpooch peaks. After establishing Camp 1, we descend back to Advance Base Camp for the night.
Trek duration: 6–7 hours

Day 8: Advance Base Camp – Camp 1
We ascend once again to Camp 1, following the same route as the previous day. The terrain becomes more demanding as we gain altitude, requiring careful movement and steady pacing. Overnight at Camp 1.
Trek duration: approx. 6 hours

Day 9: Camp 1 – Summit Camp (5,500m)

Trek duration: 4–5 hours

Day 10: Summit Attempt – Black Peak (6,387m)
We begin our summit push around midnight after assessing weather and route conditions. The climb involves steep ice walls with gradients of 70–75 degrees, using fixed ropes, crampons, and jumars. After a challenging ascent, we reach the summit of Black Peak (6,387m), rewarded with breathtaking views of the Garhwal Himalayas. After a brief celebration, we descend carefully back to Summit Camp.
Summit duration: 10–12 hours

Day 11: Reserved Summit Day
This day is kept as a contingency in case weather or conditions prevent a summit attempt on the previous day. It provides flexibility and increases the chances of a successful ascent.

Day 12: Summit Camp – Base Camp
After completing the summit phase, we descend from Summit Camp back to Base Camp. The long descent is taken at a controlled pace, allowing us to safely enjoy the dramatic high-altitude scenery one last time. Overnight at Base Camp.

Frequently asked questions

The Black Peak route includes rocky and steep trails, high-altitude ridges, scree slopes, snowfields, and glacier travel. It demands good balance, surefootedness, and a basic comfort with altitude and exposed terrain.

The summit of Black Peak is at 6,387 m (20,965 ft). Altitude is the main challenge, and much of the trek involves continuous elevation gain to higher camps.

This is a moderate to hard high-altitude expedition. While not highly technical like full mountain climbing routes, it requires:

  • glacier travel
  • use of crampons and ice axe
  • long summit day with steep sections

It’s not suitable for absolute beginners.

The optimal climbing window generally falls in:

  • Pre-monsoon: May–June
  • Post-monsoon: September–October
These seasons typically provide more stable weather and clearer skies.

The expedition typically lasts 25–30 days, including acclimatization and buffer days. Climbers spend multiple nights above 5,700 m, making altitude management a key factor.

The total duration is approximately 3–4 weeks, including:

  • approach trek
  • acclimatization days
  • summit attempt
A significant number of days are spent above 4,000 m, which makes gradual acclimatization essential.

This expedition is for trekkers with high-altitude experience and good physical fitness. You should be:

  • Comfortable with long trekking days
  • Able to carry a light backpack uphill for several hours
  • Experienced with altitude exposure

➡️ Please refer to the Preparation Guide for detailed training and conditioning requirements.

You will need a combination of:

  • Reliable trekking boots
  • Crampons + ice axe
  • Harness and climbing gear

Warm layers and high-altitude clothing
A full gear list is included in the Preparation Guide.

Water is sourced from spring/stream sources along the route and near camps. It should be purified or treated before drinking to avoid illness.

Preparation should focus on:

  • Cardiovascular endurance (running/hiking)
  • Strength training (legs & core)
  • Load-carrying practice
➡️ Detailed preparation guidance is in the Preparation Guide.
  • A WhatsApp group will be created for all participants for preparation and coordination queries.
  • Zoom briefing sessions will be conducted to:
    • go through the itinerary
    • explain expectations
    • answer specific queries during a live Q&A
  •

Black Peak is a rewarding high-altitude expedition that blends challenging terrain with stunning Himalayan views. Serious preparation, respect for altitude, and proper training are the keys to a safe and successful climb.
