Mount Kosciuszko, the highest peak in Australia, is a unique international experience combining alpine trekking with global mountaineering goals. While not technically difficult, it offers a symbolic summit for those pursuing Seven Summits journeys.

The climb involves alpine terrain, weather exposure, and long walking days depending on the route chosen. It is ideal for beginners entering international mountaineering or those building experience toward larger objectives.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Sydney

Activity: Pickup and Hotel Check-in
Arrive at Sydney Airport, where you will be greeted by our team and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, take the rest of the day to relax, recover from travel, and explore nearby areas at your own pace. Evening briefing on the upcoming Mount Kosciuszko trek will cover the route, safety protocols, and preparation tips. Overnight stay at the hotel in Sydney.


Day 2: Drive from Sydney to Jindabyne

Distance: ~500 km | Drive Time: ~6 hours
After breakfast, depart Sydney for Jindabyne, the gateway town to the Snowy Mountains. The drive offers scenic views of rolling hills, forests, and rivers as you transition from city landscapes to alpine terrain. Upon arrival, check in to your accommodation in Jindabyne. Evening at leisure to relax, stretch, and prepare for the summit trek. Overnight stay in Jindabyne.


Day 3: Summit Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m) and Return to Jindabyne

Trek Distance: ~18 km round trip | Trek Time: ~6–8 hours
After an early breakfast, start your trek from the trailhead to Mount Kosciuszko, the highest peak in mainland Australia. The hike passes through alpine meadows, wildflower fields, and scenic ridgelines. At the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the Snowy Mountains and capture memorable photographs. After soaking in the vistas, descend carefully back to the trailhead and return to Jindabyne for dinner and overnight stay.


Day 4: Drive from Jindabyne to Sydney

Distance: ~500 km | Drive Time: ~6 hours
After breakfast, check out from the hotel and drive back to Sydney. Enjoy the scenic journey as you descend from the alpine region back to city landscapes. Arrive in Sydney in the evening and check in to your hotel. Spend the evening at leisure or explore Sydney’s highlights. Overnight stay in Sydney.


Day 5: Departure from Sydney

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and transfer to Sydney Airport for your onward flight. Depart with memories of your Mount Kosciuszko adventure and scenic Snowy Mountains experience.

INCLUSIONS

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation in Jindabyne or nearby mountain lodge/hotel on twin-sharing basis before and after the climb, as per itinerary.

    During the trekking phase inside Kosciuszko National Park, accommodation will be arranged in mountain lodges or alpine huts depending on the itinerary.


    Meals

    Meals as specified in the itinerary, including:

    • Breakfast

    • Packed or trail lunch during trekking days

    • Dinner at accommodation locations

    Meals are designed to provide adequate nutrition and energy during alpine trekking conditions.


    Transportation

    All ground transportation as per itinerary, including:

    • Airport pick-up and drop-off from Canberra Airport or Sydney Airport (depending on itinerary).

    • Transfers between airport, accommodation, and trekking start/end points.

    • Local vehicle transfers required for the expedition program.


    Trek Leadership & Support Staff

    • Experienced and certified trek leader from Boots & Crampons

    • Local trekking guides familiar with the terrain and weather conditions of Kosciuszko National Park


    Permits & Park Fees

    All required permits and park entry fees for trekking inside Kosciuszko National Park are included.


    Safety & Medical Support

    • Basic first aid medical kit carried by the trek leader

    Expedition Management

    Complete expedition planning, coordination, and logistics support by Boots & Crampons.

    Participants will receive a Trek Completion Certificate upon successful completion of the program.

  • International & Domestic Travel

    International or domestic airfare to and from Sydney or Canberra is not included.

    Participants are responsible for arranging their own flights.


    Visa & Travel Documentation

    Australian visa fees and travel documentation costs are not included. Participants are responsible for securing the necessary visa prior to travel.


    Personal Equipment & Gear

    Personal trekking gear is not included, including:

    • Trekking shoes or boots

    • Personal clothing layers

    • Gloves, hats, and accessories

    • Daypack and personal equipment

    A recommended gear list will be shared before the expedition.


    Personal Expenses

    Expenses of a personal nature are not included, such as:

    • Bottled water and beverages

    • Snacks and personal food purchases

    • Phone calls, internet usage, and laundry

    • Souvenirs and personal shopping


    Travel Insurance

    Mandatory travel insurance covering the following is not included:

    • Trekking activities

    • Medical treatment and hospitalization

    • Emergency evacuation if required


    Staff Tips & Gratuities

    Tips and gratuities for guides and expedition staff are optional but customary and are not included in the expedition cost.

PREPARATION GUIDE

  • Please read carefully before registering

    At Boots & Crampons, preparation is not optional. The level of training required depends on the duration, altitude, and technical difficulty of the trek or expedition you are signing up for.

    • This is a beginner-friendly trek and does not require prior trekking or mountaineering experience.
    • You should be reasonably fit, healthy, and comfortable with walking for several hours a day.
    • If you are not regularly active, 1–2 weeks of basic preparation is recommended.
    • Practice walking uphill or climbing stairs, preferably with a light backpack.
    • Build basic cardiovascular endurance—jogging or brisk walking is highly recommended.
    • Focus on leg strength with simple exercises like squats and step-ups.
    • Mental readiness is important—weather, terrain, and plans may change in the mountains.
    • Follow instructions given by the trek leader and support staff at all times.

Proper preparation increases not just your chances of success, but also your safety and enjoyment in the mountains.

THINGS TO PACK

For Your Head:

  • Woolen warm cap to protect against cold winds
  • Balaclava for extra warmth
  • Bandana (can be used as a sweatband or to cover your face from dust)

For Your Feet:

  • 4-5 pairs of regular socks
  • 1-2 pair of thick woolen socks for warmth
  • Trekking boots with ankle support and good grip
  • Extra pair of comfortable sneakers or shoes to wear at the Tea House

For Your Hands:

  • 1-2 pairs of warm inner gloves
  • 1 pair of waterproof gloves to keep your hands dry
  • Hand warmers (optional, but useful in very cold weather)
  • A pair of fleece gloves for extra insulation

The trail is predominantly well-formed walking paths through forests, rolling hills, and subalpine plains. The final section to the summit includes rocky and exposed ridgelines, but there is no technical climbing involved.

The summit of Mt. Kosciuszko reaches approximately 2,228 m (7,310 ft) — the highest point on the Australian continent and one of the Seven Summits.

This is a beginner-friendly, non-technical mountain walk. While physical fitness helps make the day enjoyable, no climbing skills or special equipment (like ropes or crampons) are required.

The standard walk is around 6–8 hours (depending on start point) and covers about 13–18 km round trip, usually from Charlotte Pass or Thredbo.

The most suitable seasons are:

  • Spring to early Autumn (October – April) – clearer trails and mild weather
    The area can receive snow in winter, affecting trail access and conditions.

Preparation should focus on:

  • Cardio endurance (walking, hiking, cycling)
  • Strength training for legs & core
  • Practice walking on uneven trails

Water is obtained from glacial streams and snow melt. The expedition team treats water, but climbers should carry personal purification tablets or filer water bottles as backup
