overview

Mount Yunam offers a strong high-altitude experience in the Indian Himalayas, blending glacier travel, snow slopes, and long summit days. Though less known, Yunam demands solid acclimatization and endurance.

The climb includes moraines, glacial approaches, and snow sections near the summit. Thin air, wind exposure, and extended effort define summit day. Yunam is ideal for climbers seeking serious altitude exposure without extreme technical difficulty.

ITINERARY

Day 01: Arrival in Manali (2,050m)

Arrive in Manali in the morning and transfer to the hotel for check-in. The day is kept relaxed to recover from travel fatigue and prepare for the high-altitude journey ahead. In the evening, you may explore Manali’s local attractions such as Mall Road, Old Manali, or visit the ancient Hadimba Temple set amidst cedar forests. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Manali.

Day 02: Manali – Jispa (3,300m)

Drive Distance: 136 km | Drive Time: 4–5 hours
After breakfast, we begin a scenic drive along the Leh–Manali Highway, one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the Himalayas. En route, we pass through the Atal Tunnel, emerging into the dramatic landscapes of Lahaul Valley. The drive offers stunning views of glaciers, rivers, and traditional Lahauli villages. By afternoon, we reach Jispa, located along the banks of the Bhaga River. On arrival, tents are set up and the remainder of the day is spent resting and acclimatizing. Overnight stay in tents at Jispa.

Day 03: Jispa – Bharatpur Base Camp (4,700m)

Route: Via Baralacha La Pass (4,890m)
Distance: 63 km | Drive Time: ~3 hours
Today we drive deeper into the high Himalayas, ascending toward Baralacha La Pass. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged and barren, offering spectacular views of snow-covered peaks and vast high-altitude plains. After crossing the pass, we descend slightly to reach Bharatpur, which serves as the Base Camp for Yunam Peak. Upon arrival, we establish Base Camp and attend a detailed expedition briefing covering route plans, safety procedures, and acclimatization strategy. The rest of the day is reserved for rest and hydration. Overnight stay in camps.

Day 04: Load Ferry and Acclimatization Hike (up to 5,200m)

Today is dedicated to acclimatization and preparation for higher camps. After breakfast, we carry essential equipment and supplies toward the summit camp route. Following the load ferry, we continue with an acclimatization hike up to approximately 5,200 meters before descending back to Base Camp. This gradual exposure helps the body adapt to the altitude and improves summit success chances. The total activity duration is around 5 to 6 hours. Overnight stay in tents at Base Camp.

Day 05: Bharatpur Base Camp – Summit Camp (5,300m)

After an early start, we move toward Summit Camp with full gear. The trail ascends gradually over rocky and glacial terrain, allowing for a steady and manageable climb. The pace is intentionally slow to maintain proper acclimatization. Upon reaching Summit Camp, tents are pitched, and the remainder of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for the summit push. Overnight stay in tents at Summit Camp.

Day 06: Summit Day – Yunam Peak (6,100m)

We begin our summit attempt very early, around 2:00 AM, under headlamp light. The ascent involves negotiating scree slopes, icy patches, and loose rocky terrain, requiring careful movement and steady pacing. After several hours of climbing, we reach the summit of Yunam Peak (6,100m). From the top, we are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Zanskar and Lahaul ranges, stretching endlessly across the horizon. After spending a short but memorable time at the summit, we descend carefully back to Summit Camp. The total duration for ascent and descent is approximately 10 to 11 hours. Overnight stay in tents at Summit Camp.

Day 07: Buffer / Reserve Day

This day is kept as a reserve to accommodate unforeseen weather conditions, additional acclimatization needs, or a second summit attempt if required. If the summit has already been achieved successfully, the day may be used for rest or an early descent depending on conditions and group fitness. Overnight stay in camps.

Day 08: Summit Camp – Bharatpur Base Camp – Drive to Manali

After breakfast, we descend from Summit Camp back to Bharatpur Base Camp, a trek of approximately 3 hours. Once at Base Camp, we pack up and begin the long but scenic drive back to Manali, covering around 200 km over 6 to 7 hours. Upon arrival, we check in to the hotel and enjoy a well-deserved rest after the expedition. Overnight stay at the hotel in Manali.

Day 09: Departure from Manali

After breakfast, we check out from the hotel. The expedition officially concludes, and participants depart for their onward journey, carrying unforgettable memories of their Yunam Peak summit experience.
